Media darlings dump P5, Cain steals show with props from Santorum [UPDATE]

Today Florida’s Presidency 5 had a string of events leading up to the afternoon straw poll, with results said to be given by FL Gov. Rick Scott around 5:45 PM ET.

Florida takes pride in being the one state whose straw polls has picked the Republican nominee who later went on to win the presidency all three times. However, during the P5 event on the same day as the straw poll, the media darlings are nowhere to be seen. Mitt Romney and Michelle Bachmann chose not to appear, while Ron Paul and Rick Perry both chose to have not-so-impressive spokesmen speak on their behalf.

Of the candidates that did decide the people of Florida matter, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gringrich, all made a personal showing. While Herman Cain opened his in-person speech with a video clip, John Huntsman opted to spend his entire time on video recording rather than appearing in person.

For the record, Bachmann, Romney, and Perry are schmoozing the delegates in Mackinac, MI, while Huntsman is in New Hampshire. And reports are, although Perry did not speak to the people in Florida, he had breakfast with the Florida delegates this morning. With what appears to be an Obama-sense of traveling, Perry was in Indiana yesterday, Florida this morning, and Michigan this afternoon. The lack of personal face-time in Florida by the media’s top-tier candidates begs the question, are the media picks really about leading the people, or catering to the establishment?

Back in Florida, with his “common sense” solutions, Herman Cain, speaking after Ron Paul’s spokesman, stole the show. With no less than five standing ovations, Mr. Cain garnered numerous uproars of applause for his ‘target-finding’ tactics with everything from economics to foreign policy and faith to personal empowerment. He also brought a huge round of applause for his reminding the crowd that the people are endowed with the right to “alter or abolish” a government that is not working and that it is time to abolish it.

Following Cain on stage was Rick Santorum, whose first line was, “The person who arranged for me to follow Herman Cain has been removed from my campaign.”

If the showing of the candidates and the responses from the crowd is any indication, it appears, of those candidates that chose to be present, Cain will take the Florida straw poll with Newt Gingrich a close second, who also had a fair share of audience enthusiasm.

Check back for the results of today’s straw poll, which began at 3:40 PM ET.
